I was in the same boat roughly a year ago, decided to go Core 2 Duo Q9550 with a better graphics card. Then bad company 2 came out :D . So this year I upgraded again to a Core I5 2500K and another new card also another SSD, really noticeable improvement in frame rate, and the only way to enjoy the game is if your getting +60fps imo. Bare in mind, my 22" has a crazy pixel density and I also use a 40" to watch videos and stuff while playing :P, but the upgrades were well worth it for me. For you as long as your getting acceptable frame rates then I agree you should be fine for at least another year, after that new consoles will be getting announced hopefully :D Meaning the stagnations from GPU vendors will hopefully cease.

P.s. Update your blog noob! :P

I've noticed the same thing, tbh, but you've actually missed a few of the major reasons why it's happening:

1) Consoles. Gaming is pretty much the only major performance requiring computer activity at present. Now, considering that the PC gaming scene isn't huge these days, most companies spend their money developing for the consoles and don't bother much with the PC and even then, don't particularly try that hard to use the full power of a computer. When you realise that the most recent current gen console release (barring the various models) was November 06, it becomes fairly obvious that anything that is using all a console is not going to tax a modern gaming machine a right lot. Heck, the benchmark game for modern PC gaming (Crysis) was released nearly 3 years ago. Interesting, this lack of demand for hardware is probably a self fulfilling prophecy, as the game developers will see the hardware spread currently used and realise there's not much point developing for the high end machines when few exist.

2) Physics. I'm pretty sure there's quite a few problems with making hardware significantly better without a massive revolution. Transistor shrinking is reaching a limit with the current methods, so performance density is pretty hard to improve, and most over avenues of performance are being tested, but nothing much is coming up (I did see something interesting about using low precision maths for really fast processors where accuracy didn't particularly matter, though). The next major step is pretty much quantum computing, and that's quite a way off.

As for just buying shelf computers, it's still a fair bit cheaper to build, and personally I think it's quite fun.

TBH, I think there isn't much reason to build a new computer atm other than a breakage or needing an extra unit, but there will probably be some sort of boom in the next decade or so that will make it worth it again. Saying that, I do plan to build a new comp once I finish uni, but that's mostly because this one is really unreliable.

P.S. sorry, this comment is super rambly and not very well thought out.

That only works if you keep both infinitys the same though....

It is any number you want it to be, as inifinity is more of a theory than a number (methinks).
